The PlacePod mobile app is used for activating, provisioning and debugging PlacePods. The PlacePod is designed as set and forget, once the PlacePod is transmitting to the LoRa network there is little need to connect to it with the app.
The recommended app is available for iOS from the app store. There is also an Android version available but it is highly recommended to use the iOS version.
We recommend iOS because it has a more consistent Bluetooth implementation. Since all iOS devices are made by the same vendor they have very strict deployment of the Bluetooth hardware and they will all behave the same.
However Android devices are made by many different vendors and have hundreds of variations. Our Android application has been tested on many different devices and each behaves differently in terms of connection time.
The Bluetooth advertising packet on the PlacePod advertises every 2 seconds when the devices is deactivated (in shipping mode) once the PlacePod is activated it will advertise every 10 seconds. There are 3 possible BLE advertising channels and it will take a maximum of 30 seconds for the packet to be received by the phone. Therefore expect it to take at least 30 seconds to connect, it will usually take longer and require 3-4 attempts with android.
Note on Android if the connection is not made within 45 seconds press the back button and try again. Some devices will timeout waiting for the connection but the time out message will get delayed.
